The epiphytic cactus Epiphyllum oxypetalum is a native of Central and South America. Dragon fruit is just one of many varieties of epiphyllum.

However, it's always best to keep houseplants out of reach of pets to prevent any accidental ingestion, which could lead to an upset stomach or other minor symptoms.

This captivating plant not only adds a touch of tropical beauty to your home but also holds a deep cultural and medicinal significance. In colder climates, it should be kept indoors as a houseplant to avoid frost damage.

In the world of succulents and cacti, one plant stands out not just for its beauty but for its breathtakingly rare behavior — the Queen of the Night orchid.

Also known as Epiphyllum oxypetalum, this plant blooms only once a year, and only at night.

As early as 1645, China makes reference to it.

Like many botanical Epiphyllum, Epiphyllum oxypetalum is self-sterile, which means that the only way to produce fruits and receive seeds is through fertilization of flowers from two distinct clones. Once the pod is opened, you will find the inside lined with tiny black seeds. Soak the soil completely when watering, and water regularly during the spring and summer.

The plant is susceptible to root rot in the presence of overwatering or poorly drained soil. They have wavy or lobed edges, giving them a delicate, fern-like appearance. Add salt and pepper to taste, as well as other spices if desired. This makes the pod look like a miniature watermelon. Direct sunlight can cause sunburn.

  • Soil: Requires well-draining soil with added sand or perlite.

    Epiphyllum Jagged (Epiphyllum Crenatum)

The distinctive feature of Epiphyllum jagged is its emerald-colored branches, which can reach 70 centimeters in length and 10 centimeters in width. They make a great side dish option with any protein-rich meal!

    Can You Eat Epiphyllum Flower?

The pods on Epiphyllum plants are edible.

It flowers in the spring in greenhouses, and intermittently outside in the summer. They are night-blooming and wither by the next morning. After flowering, purplish-red fruits are produced that are edible.

The queen of the night has slightly different growing needs than other cacti or succulents. Epiphyllum sour-petal has been used as the foundation for the production of numerous hybrid cultivars with different inflorescence size and color variations.

Epiphyllum Anguliger, or Angular (Epiphyllum Anguliger)

Epiphyllum angularis is a succulent with many branches that has triangular or flattened shoots that are a bright green color.

The blooms then fall off and the plant will continue to bloom all summer.

In addition to its white flowers, the plant also produces bright red fruit. Cactus or succulent potting mix is ideal.

  • Watering: Water thoroughly during the growing season, allowing the topsoil to dry out between waterings.
