Generally, individuals who have a bowel movement at least three times a week and pass well-formed stools (neither too hard nor too soft) are considered to have normal bowel function.

    Since defining “normal” can be challenging, healthcare professionals use the Bristol Stool Scale to classify stools based on how long they have spent in the bowel.

    To aid the research, they swallowed marker pellets to measure digestion time, while their stool samples were weighed for analysis.     What is the Bristol stool chart?

    The Bristol Stool Chart is a medical aid for anyone who wants to understand and improve their bowel movements.

    Stool consistency and the descriptions of diarrhea have been outlined in the Bristol Stool Scale (see Figure 17.4).77 Diarrhea has been found to be highly prevalent among individuals with AIDS (90%), when compared to cancer survivors (29%) and patients with renal disease (21%).70

    Experts these types to be the most healthy and typical stool forms.

    Type 5 stools are soft blobs with clear-cut edges that a person can pass easily. A healthy stool is typically Type 3 or 4 and should be passed once every one to three days, depending on individual habits.


    What to know about the Bristol Stool Form Scale

    The BSFS categorizes stool into seven types.

    Sigmoidoscopy may detect the pseudomembranes of PMC but the disease sometimes only affects the more proximal large bowel. Therefore, a colonoscopy would be required to adequately exclude all such changes. Diarrhea is classified in severity by grades from 1 (an increase of up to four stools per day beyond a person’s baseline), to 4 (life-threatening, requiring urgent medical care).

    They allow the body to absorb fluid and nutrients from food and process and expel the waste.

    Signs of a healthy bowel can :

    • regular bowel movements of well-formed (types 3 and 4) stools
    • being able to hold on for a short amount of time after first feeling the urge to pass a stool
    • defecating within roughly a minute of sitting on the toilet
    • passing a stool without any pain or need to strain
    • completely emptying the bowel when having a movement

    In addition to having a healthy diet, drinking plenty of fluids, and getting regular exercise, people can try other strategies to improve their bowel health and function.

    What you see in the toilet bowl is a reflection of your diet, hydration, medications, and lifestyle. In more severe cases, a healthcare professional may prescribe medications to soften the stool and encourage the colon to pass feces.

    Types 3, 4, and 5

    Type 3 has a shape similar to a sausage but with cracks on the surface, while type 4 has a comparable appearance to type 3 but with a smooth and soft surface.

    Both types could indicate constipation, as these stools are hard, dry, and difficult to pass.
